Learning and Visualizing

Understanding often begins with careful observation. In education, having an object in hand can make the difference between simply knowing and truly understanding: forms, structures, and anomalies only become fully clear when they are presented with clarity.

Specimens, models, and teaching collections show how learning depends on comparison, recognition, and visualisation: from architecture and anatomy to biology and the earth sciences. Architectural models reveal how ideas are made visible, from handcrafted wooden maquettes to digitally laser-cut constructions that expose a design layer by layer. In the Organ Museum, pathology can quite literally be studied at close range: real organs and tissues show what disease actually looks like and make medical progress tangible, from the large tumours of the past to the subtle abnormalities of today. (Animal) skeletons and other osteological teaching materials likewise sharpen spatial understanding, while also inviting reflection on provenance and on the handling of human remains - an important contemporary dimension of learning through collections. In the rock and mineral collection and the herbarium, 'learning to look' takes a different form: identifying specimens on the basis of their features, simple tests, and carefully recorded contextual data. Together, these objects show that knowledge is not only something to be read, but also something to be observed - a challenge to learn to see with new eyes.
