Transportation Research Institute (IMOB) : project R-6133

Title : Spatial transferability of Activity-Based models: A case study of Flanders and South Korea (R-6133)
Abstract: This study aims to provide a guideline for enhancing spatial transferability of Activity-Based Models (ABM). The study contains three research phases: literature study, survey study, and simulation study. In the literature study, differences in activity-trip behaviors and their origins will be established. In the survey study, the differences between regions with different cultural backgrounds will be identified using existing surveys (OVG for Flanders, Belgium and HTS for South Korea). In the simulation phase, the FEATHERS activity-based model, which was developed in Belgium, will be used to model a study area in South Korea. Based on the (dis-)similarities found between Flanders and South Korea in the simulation phase, data requirements for ABMs and opportunities for transferability will be investigated. Both parties established a bilateral collaboration, which resulted in two international seminars in Seoul and several meetings in Hasselt. Moreover, we have been jointly publishing several academic papers. Through this project, we will be able to further strenghten our cooperation on the investigation of transferability of ABMs (and FEATHERS in particular). An improved insight in transferability allows for a more efficient implementation of ABMs in new areas, as such constituting an imporant driver for the adoption of ABMs in new geographical areas.
Period of project : 1/01/2015to31/12/2016
