SW Guest lecture 'Reporters without borders'

As part of the awarding of the honorary doctorates, we are organising a guest lecture on disinformation in times of digitalisation. This will take place on Tuesday 28 May 2024 from 10am-12pm in auditorium Louis Verhaegen (AUD1) on the Hasselt Campus.

We welcome Julie Majerckzak (Reporters without borders), journalist Mahmoud Elsobky and Belga CEO Patrick Lacroix on 28 May for a guest lecture as part of the OPO Grand Challenges I of the Social Sciences programme.

Julie Majerczak

Julie Majerczak heads the Reporters Without Borders headquarters in Brussels. She has represented the international press freedom NGO at EU level since May 2016. Before joining Reporters Without Borders, Julie was a journalist for 16 years. In 2002, she moved to Brussels to report on EU affairs for the French daily Libération, for which she worked for 10 years. She also reported for French daily Le Parisien, RTL radio and online media Contexte. Born in Paris, she has a master's degree in law and graduated from Sciences Po in Paris.

Mahmoud Elsobky

Mahmoud Elsobky, is an Egyptian-Belgian freelance investigative journalist. He has worked for BBC, CNN, The Guardian and The Sun. He has also collaborated on several VRT NWS productions. His focus is on the Middle East and North Africa. He obtained his master's degree in journalism and media in Europe from the VUB. His work has been honoured with several awards such as the Samir Kassir Award for Press Freedom 2023. This was awarded to him for his excellent reporting on illegal migration, passport traffickers and the black market for European travel documents.

Patrick Lacroix

Patrick Lacroix is CEO of Belga. Since 1920, Belga News Agency has been bringing all national and international news, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The news is distributed in the form of text, photos and in audio, data visuals and video format. Belga publishes in English, Dutch and French.
The news agency covers all contemporary fields, from politics, economics and finance to social affairs, sports and culture.
They also provide tools for communication professionals to manage, monitor and analyse news and communication via the platform Belga.press.
