University Biobank
The academic clinical research center of Hasselt University, Jessa Hospital and Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL) that contributes to better healthcare
LCRC is the result of a unique structural collaboration between Hasselt University, Jessa Hospital and Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL).
We advance healthcare by integrating clinical practice and academic research, translating patient needs into innovative solutions that improve care today and shape the medicine of tomorrow. Our core activities bring together bedside research and PhD trainings.
Patient-driven clinical research
We conduct high-quality, patient-oriented research embedded in clinical practice. Through PhD trajectories led by clinicians and biomedical scientists, real-world clinical challenges are translated into impactful solutions that directly benefit patient care.
Training the next generation
LCRC offers a unique environment where students and PhD researchers gain hands-on experience at the intersection of academia and clinical practice. Through integrated training programmes, we prepare future scientists to drive innovation in healthcare.
The Mobile Health Unit advances research on digital and mobile technologies to improve patient monitoring, diagnosis, and care. As a multidisciplinary collaboration, the unit develops practical and evidence-based mHealth solutions grounded in both clinical expertise and academic innovation.
The LCRC offers internship and thesis opportunities for students from a range of programmes, including bachelor’s and master’s Biomedical Sciences, the Medicine bachelor programme, Data Science and Statistics, and Engineering. Depending on the discipline, students contribute to clinical and translational research, data analysis, digital health innovation or the development of new medical and wearable devices. All internships within the LCRC network are highly hands-on and designed to provide meaningful, high-quality learning experiences. Students work within real clinical research settings, often with direct patient contact, and gain valuable practical skills that prepare them for future clinical, technological or academic careers.
In collaboration with Jessa Hospital, LCRC supports Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training for researchers and study personnel. These interactive sessions cover the essential principles for the design and conduct of high-quality clinical studies, with practical insights into regulatory and ethical requirements.
Training is organised twice a year and tailored to both early-career and experienced researchers. Participants receive a TransCelerate-recognised GCP certificate, ensuring compliance with international standards in clinical research. For more information, upcoming training dates and registration, please visit the Jessa Hospital website.
LCRC is closely involved in the Postgraduate Clinical Trial Leader programme at Hasselt University, a specialised 20 ECTS certificate designed for professionals in clinical research and healthcare. The programme offers applied training in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), clinical study design, data science fundamentals and project management, combining interactive sessions with real-world clinical projects. Participants gain practical skills, a GCP certificate and enhanced leadership capabilities that prepare them to take a leading role in the planning and execution of clinical trials.
