Teaching assignment

In the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences you are partly responsible for data science, multi-omics and/or neuroscientific education. This includes teaching through lectures, tutorial groups, work sessions and practicals, but also includes the (co)coordination of course components. You are expected to contribute to meeting current needs within UH education. Contributions and/or coordination for some of the following educational assignments are envisaged. The exact content will be determined in consultation with the candidate. Possible examples include data science, research track (data science / neuroscience), junior and senior internships, grant writing or elective courses in the BMW master's program.

Research assignment

You will develop your own research program within neuroscience on the underlying mechanisms and treatment of neurological disorders using future-proof technologies including multi-omics approaches and data analysis within neuroscience into the underlying mechanisms and treatment of neurological disorders. The research is complementary to the current research lines of the BIOMED research institute, with good cooperation with the clinical research center LCRC. Bringing in new research technologies, that can strengthen BIOMED's research priorities is a strong plus. You are also interested in research collaboration with the clinical partners of the faculty.

The candidate will become a member of the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences in the Neurosciences department at Hasselt University. The research is conducted at the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED)

The Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED) of Hasselt University conducts high-level multidisciplinary research to advance progress in human life sciences. Using state-of-the-art technologies, BIOMED generates novel insights in three main disease areas: neuroscience, immunology and cardiometabolic science. BIOMED aims to translate new scientific discoveries into applications that contribute to a healthy society, in line with the civic ambition of Hasselt University. 

The Neuroscience department is looking for a motivated lecturer/senior lecturer/professor (50-100%) to strengthen education, research and services related to future-proof data science and multi-omics analysis in the field of neuroscience. We are looking to strengthen neuroscientific research and data science, with strong complementarity with the existing research lines within the Neuroscience department and BIOMED. Complementarity is also sought with research within the university, the faculty, the BIOMED institute and the Limburg Clinical research center (LCRC).

Your talents

  • You have a PhD with a thesis in (bio)medical sciences, medicine, biology, bioinformatics, data science, bioengineering or pharmacy (or equivalent).
  • You have excellent expertise and academic track record with publications in international high-quality scientific journals in the field of neuroscience. 

  • You have extensive expertise in the application of data science and or -omics in the field of biomedical sciences.

  • You have at least 3 years of active postdoctoral research experience, as lead researcher, in the specific research domain and proven experience in applying for external (inter)national research funding.
  • You have a good view of the latest trends and developments in the specific research domain.
  • You have experience in supervising doctoral students, technicians and/or master's students. You have the necessary qualities to lead a research team.
  • You have the necessary qualities to function within a multidisciplinary research group. 
  • Complementarity with the existing research expertise within BIOMED and LCRC is an added value.
  • You have an extensive (inter)national research/education network in the relevant domains.
  • experience with academic education is a great added value. You enjoy teaching and convey the lesson content enthusiastically to your students.
  • Dutch is the administrative language of Hasselt University. This implies that at the time of your appointment or within 5 years after your appointment as a member of the tenured academic staff, you must be able to demonstrate that your knowledge of Dutch is at least at CEFR level B2. If this is not yet the case at the time of your appointment, we offer you language lessons as support. You have a maximum of 5 years to achieve the required level.
    When taking up a teaching assignment as coordinating lecturer or co-lecturer, you must always be able to demonstrate mastery of the language of instruction of the program component at CEFR level C1. Prior to this, Hasselt University can also support you in acquiring the required language skills.

Our offer for you

If the candidate is appointed as Lecturer, the agreement will consist of a tenure track of 5 years, with the possibility of appointment as senior Lecturer in the permanent framework after favorable evaluation. Candidates appointed as Senior Lecturer or Professor, will receive a permanent position after an internship period of 3 years.
