Funding organisation:

Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen

What?

'Scientific joint mobility projects with Japan' is a scientific exchange program of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) in cooperation with the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). This program supports two-year joint research projects and covers travel expenses, accommodation, and living expenses, with special attention to junior researchers.

  • FWO offers researchers from Flanders a daily living allowance of €66,00 and pays the travel expenses towards/from Japan (to be booked through Omnia Travel)
  • JSPS pays the researchers from Japan a maximum of 5,000,000 JPY per year (for travel expenses and stay in Flanders).
Start of project: 1st of April 2027.
Duration of the projects: 2 years

New from 2026 onwards
  • In the framework of this call with JSPS Japan, you can only act once as a supervisor-spokesperson or co-supervisor at the Flemish (FWO) side.
  • The involved host institution on the Flemish side will have to give, via their FWO institution tool, formal institutional consent for the application. For applications within the framework of joint mobility projects, it will no longer be a notification; instead, the involved host institution will require a specific action.
Since 2025, the online application form has contained a specific tab 'Research Security'. Applicants are required, based on the topic of their research proposal, involved countries, and foreign partners, to complete a set of questions regarding unwanted knowledge transfer, misuse of research results, and/or interference. If the results of this questionnaire indicate that your project proposal requires research security approval, please contact RRI@uhasselt.be.

Who?

The PI holds a Ph.D. and has, throughout the project, an appointment of at least 50% at UHasselt.
In each cooperation project on the Flemish side, at least one junior scientist, Ph.D. candidate, or postdoctoral researcher with no more than 12 years of postdoctoral experience should undertake an exchange to Japan.
