A smart car that makes the driving test more fair? IMOB and MOVERA join forces.

Did you look over your shoulder to check your blind spot? Did you use your indicator when changing lanes? During a driving test, these are important actions that an examiner must assess.

To make this assessment even more objective, IMOB and MOVERA are joining forces within the framework of the TATWEER Research Chair.

Together, IMOB and MOVERA are investigating how a smart car, equipped with cameras, can assist examiners in assessing candidates’ driving ability. In this way, technology can help to better record key actions during a driving test and contribute to a more objective assessment.

MOVERA is a Belgium-based smart mobility and technology company delivering digital transformation, smart city solutions and project advisory across Europe and global markets. We connect engineering, research, intelligent technologies and international delivery expertise to create safer, smarter, more connected communities.

The smart car was unveiled on October 23rd at the ITS 2026 Congress in Leuven (Belgium). Researchers at IMOB are now setting to work to prepare the car for use on the roads in Flanders as well.

Belgian newspaper 'Het Belang van Limburg' attended the ITS 2026 Congress and published an article on this innovative scoop.

TATWEER Research Chair

Last year, the Transportation Research Institute (IMOB) launched the TATWEER Research Chair about “AI-Powered Automated Enforcement in Smart Cities: Balanced Safety, Efficiency and Privacy.”

The international technology company Tatweer established a chair within the UHasselt University Fund focusing on AI-driven traffic enforcement. The chair's focus is to develop a new enforcement system that uses artificial intelligence to detect traffic offences more effectively, proactively predict high-risk locations and times on the roads, and do so without compromising privacy, transparency and fairness.

The core of this chair focuses on the crucial intersection of technology, law, and public acceptance. The research aims for a fundamental reassessment of current traffic enforcement systems. Instead of merely reacting to violations, the chair’s ambition is to develop next-generation systems that are proactive, intelligent, and socially responsible.

Through the synergistic deployment of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital twins, the research will concentrate on creating a new enforcement framework that is not only predictive and accurate but also fundamentally socially acceptable. This is essential for the transition towards truly smart and livable urban environments.

This collaboration with MOVERA is part of the activities within the framework of the TATWEER Research Chair.
