Take Action!

Tips & actions to have an impact

During Fair Trade Week, we want to not only inform, but above all inspire concrete action.

Below you will find ideas that you can try out right away.

Sometimes it’s hard to know how to react in difficult situations: when you experience discrimination, racism, … That’s why we offer following trainings:

  • For students: a training on transgressive behavior, in collaboration with Sensoa (this will be published soon - in Dutch). On this page you will also find all other info sessions and workshops organized for students.

  • For staff: a bystander training in collaboration with the HR Department on 19 November (13u-14u30) (in Dutch).

If you recognize some issues or you feel the need to talk about it, please know that there are people and services at UHasselt where you can go.

Take action by living more consciously

How can you take action? Here are some tips, that you can incorporate into your daily life:

1. Slow fashion & reuse

  • Buy less clothes, but buy quality.

  • Look for second-hand clothing (e.g., via Vinted). This reduces the impact of fast fashion.

  • Swap clothes with friends or organize a swap meet on campus.

  • Repair clothes (sew on a button, patch a tear) instead of throwing them away.

2. Combat food waste

  • Use platforms such as Too Good To Go to rescue leftovers from shops or cafés.

  • Plan your shopping: make a weekly menu and buy specifically.

  • Eat leftovers: can we maybe introduce a “leftovers day” at campus?

  • Store food properly (follow tips: e.g., store bread in a linen bag instead of plastic).

  • Fair and sustainable purchases, go to the Wereldwinkel in Hasselt.

  • Look for labels: Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, Ecovinfo, etc.

  • Choose local, seasonal products (less transport, more ecological).

  • Consider subscription services or cooperatives for fair products.

3. Conscious consumption: energy & waste

  • Bring a refillable water bottle and reusable bag.

  • Avoid single-use products (cups, plastic cutlery) and use reusable alternatives.

  • Sort waste correctly and encourage deposit bottles.

  • Switch off appliances (don't leave them on standby) and use energy-efficient lighting.

4. Conscious eating: more plant-based & responsible meat

  • Introduce (at least) one plant-based or vegetarian dish per week.

  • If you eat meat: choose local, organic, or certified meat.

  • Pay attention to the origin of fish, dairy, and ingredients.

5. Education & engagement

  • Follow the bystander training and learn how to react during a difficult situation.

  • Organize a reading group or film screening about fair trade, the environment, or sustainable development. Contact international@uhasselt.be to get funding for your event.

  • Share your actions on social media with a hashtag (#UHasseltFairTradeWeek) to inspire others and send us a picture and information about your event.

During the fair trade week multiple organizations will be present on the Agora. Get to know them and see how you can take action as well.

> Register now and join us as Rob van Vlierden describes Thai mores and customs and how confronting them can create hilarious situations for the Western visitor.

‘Thailand Behind the Smile’, however, goes beyond a superficial description of Thai culture. It also explores how and why this Thai view of the world came about. The fact that the country was not colonised (thanks to a Belgian!), the unique mix of animism, Hinduism and Buddhism and a feudal system that differed greatly from European feudalism all play a part.
