About the function

Teaching assignment

You help ensure that the Bachelor’s program in Chemistry and the Master’s program in Materiomics grow and flourish.

You develop course material and teach in general, physical, and (in)organic chemistry within various educational programs. You also teach in interdisciplinary topics within the Materiomics program, in particular those on hybrid organic-inorganic materials and their application domains. Beside, you supervise Bachelor/Master internships and projects, also outside of the Chemistry program.

You train and supervise doctoral students.

Research assignment

You develop innovative research on the design, synthesis, and characterization of hybrid organic-inorganic (semiconducting) materials and their applications in renewable energy, energy storage, power-to-molecules, sustainable materials, and/or sensors. You do this in optimal synergy with colleagues in the Institute for Materials Research and Energyville.

Your research covers fundamental, strategic basic research as well as application-oriented research.

You actively pursue external funding to recruit researchers and to maintain the research infrastructure within the Chemistry department and the Institute for Materials Research.

About us

You are part of the Chemistry capacity group and responsible for chemistry education from bachelor to doctoral and postgraduate level, including the unique interdisciplinary Master's program Materiomics. You coordinate courses related to general, physical, organic and/or inorganic chemistry.

You also perform innovative research on hybrid organic-inorganic (semiconducting) materials within the Institute for Materials Research, an associated lab of imec vzw. In this institute, you closely collaborate with physicists and engineers on fundamental, applied, and innovation-supporting research projects toward novel materials with applications in energy, sustainability, and health.

About you

  • You hold a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or (engineering) sciences with a substantial share in chemistry (or equivalent)
  • You have expertise in the synthesis of hybrid organic-inorganic (semiconducting) materials based on the principles of self-organization and/or supramolecular chemistry and the structural and physicochemical characterization of said materials. Interdisciplinary experience (physics/chemistry or experimental/theoretical) is a bonus.
  • You have at least 3 years of experience as a postdoctoral researcher in hybrid organic-inorganic (semiconducting) materials.
  • You are an excellent researcher with publications in high-impact, peer reviewed international scientific journals.
  • You have international work experience, an international network and demonstrable experience in successfully acquiring external projects and supervising young (doctoral) researchers.
  • You are a passionate teacher with a special interest in playing a leading role in a new educational program.
  • You can organize well and communicate smoothly, also in English.
  • You enjoy working with colleagues (because goals are achieved together). Coaching students and researchers gives you energy.
  • You take responsibility, show integrity, and easily adapt to a team-oriented, interdisciplinary, and intercultural research environment.
  • Dutch is the official administrative language of Hasselt University. If you do not have a sufficient knowledge of Dutch (CEFR level B2) upon your appointment, we expect you to obtain the required level no later than 5 years after being appointed or at the moment of tenure (usually after an internship of 3 years for senior academic staff). We provide tailor-made language training. Coordinating lecturers must have a command of the language of instruction of the program component at CEFR level C1. We provide tailor-made language training.

Our offer

We will offer 

  • either an appointment as a lecturer in the tenure track system during 5 years. This will lead to an immediate permanent contract as a senior lecturer, if the Board of Directors favorably assesses the party involved, based on previously set public grading criteria.
  • Otherwise, we will offer a fulltime appointment as a lecturer or higher, which will lead to tenure. In case of a first appointment as a member of the academic staff, the Board of Directors of the University can decide on a temporary appointment for a period up to 3 years. This will lead to a permanent contract if the Board of Directors favorably assesses the party involved.
