Academic calendar

To find out when the academic year starts, when we have holidays and when the exam period starts, please consult the academic calendar per faculty.

Setting up your study programme

Required Minimum Programme

  • Study: Exchange students staying for one semester at UHasselt are strongly suggested to choose a study programme of at least 21 credit (minimum is 18 credits). Exchange students who stay a full academic year are strongly suggested to choose a study programme of at least 42 credits.
  • Internships: There is no fixed required minimum number of ECTS for internships, it depends on the purpose of the internship, the internship programme,...

This recommended minimum implies about 16 class hours on average per week or a total work load of 37 hours on average per week. To Belgian standards this is only a modest study load and represents only 75% of the normal study load for a UHasselt student.

Choose your Study Programme

To choose your study programma at Hasselt University, you consult your student exchange coordinator at your home university. Together you identify the most suitable set of courses at UHasselt. Your study programme should not be an extension of your previous study or be equivalent to (a part of) the degree scheme taken at your home university.

  • You are requested to make a (provisional) choice of courses by means of the learning agreement in the on-line registration. Please read the course outlines carefully and check prerequisites and incompatibilities before making a choice.
  • The (provisional) choice of your courses in the Learning Agreement must be signed for agreement by the student exchange coordinator at your home university. In doing so he/she certifies that at least part of the study programme at UHasselt will lead to credit transfer or another form of academic recognition by the home university. As soon as possible after reception of your application form, advice will be given on the size of the chosen programme (i.e. the study load implied) and on its suitability for your academic background. If courses are cancelled, you will get informed as soon as possible.
  • As an exchange students you can adjust you study programme after arrival, but it is strongly recommended to limit the number of changes to a minimum. One month after the start of the semester, students are requested to make a final decision on their study programme. After these dates students cannot add any subject to their study programme. This implies they will not be admitted to and cannot sit exams for subjects which are not indicated in their study programme.

Students who stay for the full academic year should submit their (provisional) choice of study programme for the second semester as early as possible.

Restrictions

Please note

  • When choosing a study programme, please notice that some subjects are incompatible. Either because one subject is a prerequisite for another subject (e.g., it makes no sense to follow an introductory and an advanced course in Finance) or because both subjects (partially) cover the same content in the same semester. It is strongly suggested to read the course outlines carefully, in order to avoid such incompatibilities.
  • When choosing subjects from different study programmes, timetable clashes may occur. This implies that a choice must be made. One cannot be admitted to a subject for which he cannot attend classes.

Class attendance

Class attendance is required and will be checked.

  • For all subjects, 'regular' class attendance is a condition for being admitted to the exam. The requirement of 'regular' attendance means that you must be present for at least 80% of the class time. It also means that you must be present on campus for the full teaching period (trimester or semester) during which the course is running. Teachers have the right to exclude students form exams for that subject if they are not in classes 80% of the time.
  • 'Working on another subject' never is an acceptable justification for absence from class. Only medical reasons and other circumstances beyond one's control are accepted.
  • Being physically present in class is not sufficient. In many subjects it is mandatory to come well prepared to class and to contribute actively to problem solving exercises, discussions, case analyses etc. In some cases active participation in class is an element of the course assessment.
  • As the study groups are formed within the first week after the orientation program, teachers normally don't accept students who arrive to UHasselt more than two weeks after the start of the program. Exceptions can be taken into consideration only in case of serious illnesses or in the event of death of a family member.

Evaluation and exams

Exams

Like Hasselt University students, exchange students are expected to take exams. The exam schedules are published four school weeks before the start of the exam period, and deviation from these dates is not possible. As exams can last until the last day of the semester, we advise exchange students not to plan their return trip until the exam schedule has been published.

Hasselt University grades exams on a scale from 0 to 20 per programme component. These grades should be interpreted as follows:

  • 0-9: unsatisfactory
  • 10-13: satisfactory
  • 14-15: good
  • 16-17: very good
  • 18 or above: excellent

How do Hasselt University grades convert to ECTS grades?

Transcript of records

At the end of an exchange programme, the home institution will receive a transcript of the student's records with the result obtained for each programme component, as well as the number of ECTS credits. Only the programme components mentioned in the definitive learning agreement will be shown on the transcript of records, as the student was only registered for those programme components.
