Your function

Teaching assignment

  • Your main teaching assignment is situated within the cell and molecular biology curriculum. You contribute to the broadening of the topic of developmental biology within the biology program.

  • You carry out teaching assignments within the bachelor and master programs of the Biology and Biomedical Sciences programs. 

  • You work with innovative didactic educational concepts appropriate to the vision of the program.

  • You collaborate on competency-based education, including scientific competencies and interdisciplinary collaboration. 

  • You work in a team and manage a team of teaching assistants per course.

Research assignment

  • You will conduct basic research in the field of cell and developmental biology, with a focus on the influence of the environment on these processes. Researchers interested in the effects of new emerging pollutants and particles on developmental processes or cell communication are particularly encouraged to apply.

  • Your research will be part of the Centre for Environmental Sciences, a multidisciplinary research institute that focuses on general environmental stress, with specific attention to the effects on organisms, soil, water and air pollution.

  • You look for collaborations, attract researchers and recruit research projects.

  • You supervise doctoral students and demonstrate organizational commitment. You contribute to the objectives of Hasselt University, the Faculty of Science, the Biology department and the Center for Environmental Science.

Your team

The Department of Biology at Hasselt University invites candidates to apply for a ZAP position in Developmental Biology as tenure track, associate or full professor, in line with the applicant's expertise. The department seeks to strengthen the area of developmental biology and to expand the technological and molecular biological expertise. We seek a researcher whose research addresses cutting-edge questions in the area of cell and developmental biology with relevance to how the environment influences these processes. 

Your talents

  • You have obtained a PhD in biology, biomedical sciences, medicine, bioengineering or pharmacy (or equivalent). You also have several years of experience in postdoctoral research.
  • You will conduct cutting-edge research in the field of developmental biology, focusing on the effects of environmental contaminants on cell communication, tissue development or organogenesis.
  • You secure external research funds to support their research program.
  • You publish research findings in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • You teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to developmental biology and contribute to the curriculum of the Bachelor of Biology and the master of Biomedical Sciences.
  • You mentor and advise undergraduate, graduate students and PhD students, including guiding of the dissertation research.
  • You participate in departmental and institutional services.
  • You will collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams and foster external partnerships in developmental biology/ developmental toxicology.
  • Dutch is the official administrative language of Hasselt University. If you do not have a sufficient knowledge of Dutch (CEFR level B2) upon your appointment, we expect you to obtain the required level no later than 5 years after being appointed or at the moment of tenure (usually after an internship of 3 years for senior academic staff). We provide tailor-made language training. If you are a coordinating lecturer you must have a command of the language of instruction of the program component at CEFR level C1. We provide tailor-made language training.

Our offer for you

  • We will offer:
    •  either an appointment as a lecturer in the tenure track system during 5 years. This will lead to an immediate permanent contract as a senior lecturer, if the Board of Directors favorably assesses the party involved, based on previously set public grading criteria.
    • Otherwise, we will offer a fulltime appointment as a lecturer or higher, which will lead to tenure. In case of a first appointment as a member of the academic staff, the Board of Directors of the University can decide on a temporary appointment for a period up to 3 years. This will lead to a permanent contract if the Board of Directors favorably assesses the party involved.
