Lecturer (tenure track) Environmental Economics: The system-level modelling perspective

Your function

Teaching assignment

Your teaching assignment may consist of courses within the undergraduate and graduate programs of the Faculty of Business Economics or other faculties where we teach economics courses. You also contribute to the development of new courses.

Research assignment

You help to complementarily strengthen the existing research portfolio of the Environmental Economics research group. You lead both economic and interdisciplinary research projects within the research group and the Centre for Environmental Sciences (CMK). You do so in collaboration with scientific partners within and outside Hasselt University. Important objectives are the realization of publications in internationally recognized journals, the expansion of the existing research network, and the supervision of PhD students.

Your team

The Environmental Economics research group focuses on answering empirical questions with a high societal urgency, such as those related to global climate change. To this end, the research group uses sustainability analyses (techno-economic and life cycle analyses) and applies these to the development and implementation of clean technologies with the aim of supporting policy-making and accelerating the decarbonization of our society. The group is now looking to expand its profile towards the empirical modeling of decarbonization at system-level. The group publishes in leading economic and interdisciplinary journals and is involved in several major international research consortia with funding from EU framework programs and Belgian and Flemish funding sources, among others. It collaborates with leading research institutions around the world. Currently, the group consists of 4 professors and 30 researchers and affiliates. The complexity of environmental topics requires multidisciplinarity. Therefore, the research group is closely embedded in the CMK, collaborating on multidisciplinary projects.

Your talents

  • You have a doctoral degree in applied economics, economics, energy economics, environmental economics or in a related field with an explicit economic profile (or equivalent)
  • You have a strong research profile that fits within the current research portfolio as shown under the 'your team' section and demonstrates that you have the potential to publish scientific research in leading international journals.
  • You have experience in quantitative, empirical modeling of decarbonization at system-level (as opposed to detailed modeling of specific cases). Experience with modeling the decarbonization of the energy system is a plus.

  • You have the necessary didactic, communication and organizational skills to provide outstanding teaching in both our undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Experience with working in an interdisciplinary group of economists and scientists/engineers is a plus.
  • Experience with successfully applying for funding from Flemish, Belgian and European agencies is a plus.
  • Experience with supervising doctoral students is a plus.
  • Your teaching assignment includes (partly) duties as a coordinating lecturer. You should, therefore, have a command of the teaching languages Dutch and English. For English, we expect level C1 from the start of your appointment. For Dutch, level C1 must be achieved within five years. If necessary, we will provide you with the necessary language support for this.

Our offer for you

We offer an appointment as a lecturer in the tenure track system during 5 years. This will lead to an immediate permanent contract as a senior lecturer, if the Board of Directors favorably assesses your performance based on previously set public grading criteria.

Starting date to be agreed. Preferably available from the first semester (September 2025) of academic year 25-26. Selection interviews will take place in March/April 2025.
