What?

A call for fundamental research with clinical translation in the field of the mechanisms of pediatric cancers.

The aim is to improve the understanding of pediatric tumor biology, including (but not limited to) studies on genetic change, signaling pathways, the tumor microenvironment. The project should include clear perspectives for applications in medicine.

A budget of € 150.000 is available and will be awarded to one research project.

Selection criteria

  • Quality of the research
  • Design, including a timeline, statistics, sample calculation, feasibility, impact and potential.
  • Innovative approaches.
  • The added value
  • of the research to existing knowledge
  • to answer a clinical issue in pediatric oncology
  • Collaborative research project focused on generating clinical impact
  • Track record
  • Previous research achievements of the project leader (main applicant) since the start of the career.
  • Career potential of the project leader (creativity, management skills, (inter)national visibility);
  • Potential of the research team and, if applicable, collaborating teams: scientific environment, competence, experience and added value of the collaboration.
  • Perspective for application in medicine
  • Communication and knowledge transfer steps
  • Adequacy and justification of the budget

Who?

The call is open to young post-doctoral researchers (maximum 8 years of active research activities (with an additional time for documented career break) following their PhD thesis public defense), working full-time or part-time (at least 50%) within a university or research center in Belgium and collaborating with clinic researchers. Collaboration between teams in Belgium is encouraged. Projects that involve collaboration with international research teams must be new and initiated and coordinated by the team based in Belgium.
