What?

Within the framework of the program 'Postdoctoral Fellowship Japan', the FWO and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) support postdoctoral research stays at a Japanese scientific institution, recognized by the JSPS.
The fellowship has a duration of minimum 12 and maximum 24 months and are open to humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. 

The grant covers:
  • Travel expenses;
  • Settling-in allowance of 200.000 Yen (approximately € 1.400);
  • Fixed monthly allowance of 362.000 Yen (approximately € 2.500);
  • Travel accident and sickness insurance coverage.
The fellowship in Japan starts after approval by JSPS and before the 30th of November 2023.

Who?

  • You are a postdoctoral researcher (PhD obtained on/after April 2nd 2017) or you will obtain your postdoctoral degree before the start of JSPS fellowship. 
  • You have not previously received a postdoctoral JSPS fellowship.
! Researchers with a Japanese nationality and/or permanent Japanese residents are not eligible.

Application?

The application consists of:
  • the application form (in English);
  • a research plan, prepared in consultation with the Japanese researcher with whom you will be staying;
  • a signed approval of acceptance of the Japanese supervisor(s);
  • a letter of reference or a letter of recommendation of your supervisor or the head of the research unit ;
  • a copy of your PhD diploma (if you haven't obtained your degree yet, please add a letter from your institution stating the date that you will receive the degree).
