FWO - ERA-NET ‘QuantERA’ – cofund call 2023

Research

Funding organisation:

Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen

What?

A new joint transnational cofunded call for research projects is open, within the framework of the ERA-NET ‘QuantERA’, a network that focusses on ‘Quantum Technologies (QT)’. The following - broad -topics are included in the call:

  • Quantum Phenomena and Resources;
  • Applied Quantum Science (nonfundable by the FWO).
ATTENTION: the FWO only finances projects submitted within the ‘Quantum Phenomena and Resources’ topic, which implies basic research. The FWO does not finance projects submitted in the framework of the ‘Applied Quantum Science’ topic.

Funded projects are expected to address one or more of the following areas:

  • Quantum communication
  • Quantum simulation
  • Quantum computation
  • Quantum information sciences
  • Quantum metrology sensing and imaging

Both the FWO (junior/senior) research project (FO) and Strategic Basic Research (SBO) funding channels are integrated within this call. The type and scope of the proposed research project will determine the choice of funding channel for the research from within Flanders (FWO). Non-compliance with the specific requirements per funding channel might lead to non-eligibility.
The main features of the project include:
  • The project duration is limited to 36 months.
  • Per consortium maximum 350.000 EUR is available for researchers applying for FWO funding, independent of the number of researchers/consortium partners applying for FWO funding.
  • Announcement of results: December 2023
  • Start date for funded projects: January 2024

Who?

The project consortia must involve a minimum of 3 eligible partners requesting funding in at least 3 of the following participating countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada (Québec), Croatia (tbc), Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy (tbc), Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal (tbc), Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye, United Kingdom.

Application?

The application procedure is open for consortia composed of researchers from at least three countries participating in QuantERA. One partner acts as the Project Coordinator for the entire consortium and is the single point of contact for the QuantERA Call Secretariat. Each consortium partner is directed by a Principal Investigator (PI), who interacts with the respective RFO. PI may not coordinate more than one proposal.

The Call follows a one-stage submission and evaluation procedure, with each proposal comprising a scientific document (a proposal form typically between 25 and 35 pages) and a financial document (a
table listing the detailed requested funding and lists of participants).
The Project Coordinator (PC) prepares a joint proposal for the whole consortium, using the templates available on the QuantERA website. The two forms (proposal form and
financial form) composing the proposal are submitted via the Electronic Submission System (ESS) for QPR and for AQS.

For the ‘FO’ funding channel the respective regulation applies. For the SBO channel, the SBO regulation has to be taken into account. SBO implies projects with a primarily economic and/or societal finality, for which ‘valorisation’ is a key - and mandatory - aspect.

When the FWO SBO project route is chosen, the researchers are also asked to provide proactively, and before the proposal submission deadline, a concise – but to the point – valorisation plan to the FWO (no fixed format, max. 1-2 A4-pages), which i) clarifies the valorisation context within Flanders (and internationally eventually), and ii) mentions the involved – and specific - actors from Flanders. This document can be sent to the eranet@fwo.be email address. Failure to comply with this requirement might lead to ineligibility.
