Research
What?
The BrightFocus Foundation is a US-based non-profit organisation with a mission to support innovative research worldwide and to promote awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, macular degeneration and glaucoma.
The Alzheimer's Disease Research Program (ADR) was established to support promising research in fields ranging from molecular biology to genetics to epidemiology. Researchers from around the world may apply for these awards.
The ADR programme offers two types of awards:
- Standard Awards: for researchers who have already generated some amount of preliminary data, but are often required to demonstrate additional, significant progress before they can apply to governmental or industrial funding agencies. The Principal Investigator (PI) may be a tenure or non-tenure track investigator at any career stage. The PI must be appropriately trained to lead an independent research study and have permission from their organisation to manage grants and supervise key personnel. These awards have a value of $300,000 for a maximum duration of three years.
- Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards: for young researchers in their final stages of mentored training. Junior and senior postdoctoral fellows who are within five years of doctoral degree referral (or the end of their residency) are eligible to apply. These awards fund projects in an established laboratory that will serve as the basis for the applicant's own independent research career. These awards have a value of $200,000 for a maximum duration of two years.
Grants may be used to cover the costs of personnel, supplies, equipment, contractual services and travel. Any other expenses must be itemised by category.
Who?
BrightFocus will fund grants for research at non-profit organisations or institutions only. The funds will be awarded to the grantee institution and not to individual PIs. For both awards, applications from individuals who are from groups underrepresented in the field of Alzheimer's disease research are strongly encouraged.
