KBS - How to promote disease prevention & initiatives for health promotion in psychiatric hospitals?

Research

Funding organisation:

Koning Boudewijnstichting

What?

Psychiatric hospitals today admit patients with a wide range of complex pathologies to their wards. Because they focus on this range of mental disorders, psychiatric hospitals sometimes tend to leave out the somatic aspect. Disease prevention and health promotion therefore struggle to become embedded in their structures, versus the other shutters of care.

Why do psychiatric hospitals find it difficult to develop a more comprehensive approach to health within their structures and services? How can people with mental disorders be guided to take preventive action?

These are the questions that the Van Mulders-Moonens Fund, managed by the King Baudouin Foundation, wants to try to answer with this new call for research projects.

With this call, the Van Mulders-Moonens Fund aims to:
  1. Identify barriers and levers for developing prevention and health promotion policies in psychiatric hospitals;
  2. formulate a set of recommendations to support the implementation of concrete prevention and health promotion initiatives in psychiatric hospitals.

Applicants must be able to present a methodology for their research projects that includes the following:
  • An update on inspiring policy practices and concrete prevention and health promotion initiatives in psychiatric hospitals in Belgium and abroad;
  • an exploratory phase in order to select a set of psychiatric hospitals ready to embark on an action research process. This exploratory phase will also produce a number of key research hypotheses;
  • A phase of observing the implementation of concrete actions in the hospitals willing to participate in the action research;
  • An analysis of the barriers and levers that may or may not facilitate the introduction of disease prevention and health promotion initiatives in psychiatric hospitals;
  • recommendations based on an intersection between the theoretical framework and the results obtained in the field.

Who?

This call is addressed to the various research institutions and structures, university or otherwise, capable of conducting action research and generally active in the field of public health and more specifically in disease prevention/health promotion research.

Collaboration with organisations that can add value to the research process is always possible.
