FWO - Weave - NWO as lead - call 2025

What?

In 2025/2026 the FWO and the Domain Science (ENW) of the Dutch Research Council (NWO) launch a pilot based on the Weave principles. Bilateral Flemish-Dutch projects within the scope of the Domain Science (ENW), with a project duration of max. 4 years, can be submitted.

It is important to know that the FWO-NWO pilot call has specific conditions so make sure to carefully read this document before starting your application.

Successful projects will start at FWO side on the 1st of January 2027.

In addition, the FWO and NWO organize a joint online info session on the 28th of November 2025 (13:00-14:30) for which you can register here.
During this info session more details will be given on the exact timelines, the eligibility, the submission procedure, etc.

When FWO is the lead agency, submission of joint Flemish-Dutch proposals is possible from the launch of the FWO call for jr./sr. research projects fundamental research: mid-January 2026 – 1st of April 2026 (17:00 CEST).
  

Who?

At Dutch (NWO) side, only one scientific position can be applied for. Please see the NWO Open Competition ENW-M call for proposals which you can find here. At Flemish (FWO) side, besides the supervisor-spokesperson (the main applicant at FWO side) there cán be more researchers involved (eg. additional supervisors and/or co-supervisors) affiliated to different research institutions, depending on the formal role they will fulfill and their added value and necessity for the proposed project and always in line with the Regulations of the Research Foundation – Flanders governing fundamental research projects.
  

Application?

When NWO is Lead Agency, submission needs to be done in the NWE Open Competition Call 2025/2026.

Submission of joint Flemish-Dutch proposals is only possible during a defined period of time: 1st of December 2025 – 24th of February 2026 (14:00 CET).

In addition to the submission to NWO as Lead Agency, the Flemish supervisor-spokesperson needs to do an obligatory administrative submission to the FWO through the E-portal, using the specific application form ‘Research project WEAVE (FWO acts as Partner Agency)’, no later than 7 calendar days after submission of the complete research proposal to NWO as Lead. Important: in the tab ‘project’ you must upload the complete and identical application with all attachments (not only the project description) as submitted to the NWO as Lead Agency (PDF format). Furthermore, make sure that each applicant involved at Flemish and Dutch sides as well as the requested Flemish budget submitted to the NWO as Lead Agency are identical to what is being submitted to the FWO in the administrative submission.
