Start session teaching professionalisation (HLS) (edition 2)

Starting your PhD also means taking your first steps into teaching, an exciting opportunity to inspire the next generation of students. To support you in this role, the Faculties GLW (Medicine and Life Sciences) and RWS (Rehabilitation sciences and physiotherapy) offer an engaging start session designed to help you feel confident and well‑prepared. 

In this session, you will explore the educational vision and teaching approach of the programs you will be involved in. You will also gain a clear understanding of what is expected from you as a teaching assistant.

Through hands‑on examples and interactive activities, we will work on essential didactical skills such as activating students, giving clear instructions, and guiding small groups. We will also look at common classroom challenges and discuss effective strategies to handle them.

By the end of the session, you will walk away with practical tools, increased confidence, and a better understanding of your teaching role.

This session is obligatory for all PhD students. You will benefit most when attending it at the start of your doctoral trajectory.

Learning outcomes

After attending this session, participants will...

• Understand the educational vision and teaching approach of the study programs in which you will be teaching, and recognise how your role fits within this broader framework.
• Apply essential didactical principles in your own teaching activities.
• Use effective strategies for classroom management to handle common challenges.

An important part of preparing for any further professional step is becoming (more) aware of the competences you have developed and/or want to develop. In the current workshop, the following competences from the UHasselt competency overview are actively dealt with:
