IUMAT is an associated lab between Hasselt University and imec. The core competence is the development and characterization of new material systems with potential use in sustainability and health. In the domain of sustainability, IUMAT focusses on energy conversion, energy storage and sustainable materials. In the domain of health the focus of the research programs relates to the development of advanced technologies for sensing via dedicated analytical techniques and systems for sensing based on quantum technologies.
More than 250 FTE are currently employed at IUMAT, of which about 80 students are preparing their PhD. The team is strongly multidisciplinary: chemists, physicists, and engineers are working together to develop the material systems of tomorrow. Our institute has more than 5000 m2 of state-of-the-art lab infrastructure, divided over four different locations.

OSCAR is an interdisciplinary team of UHasselt students and Institute of Materials Research IUMAT (UHasselt & imec). OSCAR's mission is to bring quantum sensing directly from the lab to space. OSCAR aims at the development of the next generation of magnetic field sensors based on NV centers in diamond and quantum operating principles.
Approved and founded in the Fall of 2015 under auspices of MRS and E-MRS University chapter program, the Chapter of Hasselt University is the first ever chapter in the BENELUX region (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg) and is currently ranked as the second chapter within the European Union.
