Sonny Brebels obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Hasselt University in 2018, with a dissertation in the DSOS group on small-molecule TADF materials. Afterward, he received his Master’s degree in Chemistry at the KU Leuven, where he graduated ‘with highest honors’. His Master's thesis dealt with the synthesis of CXCR4 antagonists via the ring-opening of triazoloisoquinolines, which was conducted in the group of Prof. W. Dehaen. His thesis was subsequently awarded the 2020 Royal Flemish Chemical Society Award. He subsequently returned to the DSOS group for his Ph.D. on the development of donor-acceptor type chromophores for near-infrared organic light-emitting diodes. Currently, he is working as a postdoc in the DSOS group, focusing on the development of heavy-atom-free near-infrared organic sensitizers for implementation in OLEDs, NIR-upconverters, and/or PECs.
