Functional properties of two-dimensional nanostructured materials (Research)

Abstract

In current nanotechnology, apart from the search for graphene related structures, bottom-up self-assembly of organic molecules as well as of inorganic atoms and molecules plays a crucial role as well. Moreover, when using 2D electronic systems as substrates for this self-assembly, unique new functionalities can be induced for the 2D systems which will considerably improve their applicability. In parallel with 2D monolayer materials also "topological insulators" have been developed during recent years, where a bulk insulator has a 2D electrically conducting surface with properties related to those of the 2D monolayers. With the proposed scientific research community involved research teams want to create the necessary critical mass to successfully combine self-organization and more generally surface modification for inducing improved as well as new functionalities with the ultimate aim to tune the electronic, magnetic and spintronic, mechanical, and optical properties.
