Diamond NV color center spin resonance magnetometers: from fundamentals to advanced operation principles. (Research)

Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop novel generation of ultrasensitive magnetometers based on quantum detection principles employing the photocurrent detected magnetic resonance (PDMR) using NV color centers in diamond, a method at which development I have been strongly involved. The quantum detection principles offer dramatic improvements in the sensitivity compared to the Giant Magneto Resistance sensors or Silicon Hall probes. The current quantum state spin readout of NV centres in diamond is optical using magnetic resonance (ODMR) by detecting outgoing photons by using detector placed externally. Diamond ODMR magnetometers showed already ultrahigh sensitivities approaching the sensitivity of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID). The proposed PDMR readout allows us to use as a detector diamond sensor itself. This important engineering advantage leads to the scalability and easy integration with peripheral electronics.
