Title

Oncostatin M limits inflammation and induces repair in the damaged CNS (Research)

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic progressive disorder, which for the time being can not be cured. The existing therapeutic interventions are focused on the first phase of the disease where the immune system is playing a prominent role. Current therapies are therefore only effective in curbing the disease, but no longer work when the patient enters the progressive disease phase. We are looking for new therapeutic targets that can stop or even improve the disease at this stage. In the context of this project, research is being carried out on oncostatin M (OSM), a molecule that is overexpressed in the brains of MS patients. Our initial findings show that OSM is involved in suppressing disease processes in the progressive phase. With this research we will better map these protective effects.
