Title

The Other City: a community exhibition project in the city of Hasselt, on the theme of Participatory Design, Politics and Democracy (Research)

Abstract

In the project "The Other City: A community exhibition project in the city of Hasselt, on the subject of Participatory Design, Politics and Democracy" participation and presentation go hand in hand. It is about an exhibition project where participatory design projects are shown in an engaging way. Moreover, the approach of the exhibition project is participatory in nature. Not 1 curator, but a cooperating group of international and local curators, citizens and policy actors work together to set up this project. Together they think about what is shown and in what way. We call the specific approach in which exhibiting and participating intensively interact, a Community Exhibition, a format that is still little explored in the daily exhibition practice in the design field. By making maximum efforts in this project, to make the exhibition with a community of designers, curators, citizens and policy; we learn from the challenges in such a project and we can share the" lessons learned" with the design field. It is therefore the intention to fully question and document the interactions between exhibiting and participating, in order to share knowledge with the design sector. During the opening of the exhibition, two experts (Noortje Marres and Tiziana Terranova) will also discuss the interactions surrounding participation and presentation, in order to stimulate a broader debate with the design field on participative design and its representation in the physical and digital space, new roles for the curator, the cities within which the work is shown and the public.
