Title
Inflammasome activation in T lymphocytes: a new player in the complex immune response in multiple sclerosis patients (Research)
Abstract
In multiple sclerosis, myelin-reactive T cells migrate to the brain, causing an exaggerated local immune response. Here, permanent damage to oligodendrocytes and neurons is inflicted, ultimately leading to progression of disease. Inflammasome activation is a highly pro-inflammatory and toxic process attributed to innate immune cells. However, recent studies show that it also occurs in some T lymphocyte subsets. This project elucidates whether inflammasome activation in T lymphocytes contributes to tissue damage in MS patients.
