Title

From monitoring to policy: everyone can contribute (Education)

Abstract

This IOP aims to highlight the social role a future biologist can play emphasize. The biodiversity crisis is a societal issue, where citizens can contribute to scientific research . Using professional 'rapid assessment' butterfly monitoring techniques, students learn in an integrated way the taxonomy and ecology of local butterfly populations as well as their host plants and the impact of wildlife management on them. While learning these research and analysis techniques they will engage in dialogue with other stakeholders (volunteers, INBO, Natuurpunt) with whom a collaboration is necessary to realize this research. This citizen science project will increase public support and contribute to a sustainable nature policy.
