Title
The influence of commercial driver's behaviour on Traffic flow in Tanzania and the opportunities of driver education. (Research)
Abstract
Due to severe problems with traffic congestion and traffic accidents in Tanzania, this PhD study aims to explore how an intelligent traffic system (ITS) will improve traffic flow in the city Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and will investigate how the integrating of digital technology (e.g., e-Learning and on-board devices (OBD)) influences the behaviour of commercial drivers.
The focus will be on raising awareness of road safety among commercial drivers and monitoring traffic flow. The study seeks to understand in depth the source of commercial driver accidents resulting in serious injuries and death. Also, how traffic flow at several locations (e.g., intersections and level crossings) contributes to the acci-dents will be investigated to suggest a sustainable solution that improves the traffic flow and commercial driver behaviour in Tanzania.
The main objectives of this study are:
1. To identify driving behaviours and mistakes that commercial drivers make which may cause traffic crash in Dar es Salaam and highlight their effect on traffic flow.
2. To study the relationship between the driver behaviour and the probability to be exposed to accidents.
3. To implement the pilot study of eLearning tool in driving schools which integrate both in real-time and post-trip for commercial drivers.
4. To provide recommendations on a set of the corresponding technological developments regarding level cross-ings and intersection which will improves safety and traffic flows.
