Title
Sustainable access to the Diepenbeek and Hasselt campuses and an accelerated modal shift in the wider region (Research)
Abstract
Limburg is the most car-oriented province in Flanders. Spread across the Hasselt and Diepenbeek campuses, more than 20,000 young people study, living in the wider area. The majority of students and staff use the car to get to class or to digs. The parking pressure is enormous as a result, the frequent presence of motorized traffic combined with active road users also regularly leads to unsafe situations.
The parties want to achieve a modal shift and higher traffic safety in favor of alternative transport modes such as bicycle and public transport. The objective is that these young people make the switch from the car to alternative, sustainable modes of transport. A change in behavior among the students will also be able to lead to them using more alternative modes of transportation in their future lives.
Moreover, due to its location, the Diepenbeek campus is characterised as a green environment, close to the centre of Hasselt and Diepenbeek. By realising a modal shift, less car infrastructure (car parks) will also be needed and the green character can be further enhanced
