Title
Enhancing rehabilitation in sub Saharan Africa by means of continuous professional training and the use of technology-supported rehabilitation (Education)
Abstract
This project aimed at strengthening neurorehabilitation services in French-speaking Sub-Saharan Africa, with a primary focus on Benin. This three years project seeks to address the critical healthcare challenges posed by neurological disorders such as strokes, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and others, which are prevalent and debilitating conditions in the region.
The initiative is designed around a series of structured training modules aimed at enhancing the skills and capacities of neurorehabilitation professionals. This includes the development of a regional hub for neurorehabilitation training in Parakou - Benin, where therapists will receive both theoretical and hands-on practical training. A significant component of the project is the establishment of a hybrid summer school that blends online learning with in-person internships at the University Hospital of Parakou.
Collaborations with the University of Hasselt and local entities such as the University of Parakou form the backbone of this capacity-building initiative. These partnerships are intended to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and specialized skills, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality and availability of neurorehabilitation services in the region. The project aligns with Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on good health and well-being, reducing inequalities, and building resilient infrastructure.
By training local professionals and establishing a sustainable training infrastructure, the project aims to create a lasting impact that not only improves patient outcomes but also strengthens the overall healthcare system in Sub-Saharan Africa. This strategic approach is expected to foster a self-sustaining cycle of education and improvement in neurorehabilitation practices, significantly enhancing the quality of life for individuals afflicted with neurological conditions.
