Title
Inline and offline analysis techniques for optimal leak and seal integrity analysis of new PPWR-
compliant packaging materials - LEAK (Research)
Abstract
A recent survey of companies indicated that 80.6% of these companies want to gain more knowledge
about packaging leakage and related analytical methods (inline and offline). Product loss due to
leaks, occurrence/causes of leaks in the packaging process, choice of materials, impact of transport
on seal perforation, lack of knowledge about leaks, frequency of testing, size/number of leaks, cost
price, ... were identified as important research aspects. The results of this survey underline the need
for supporting applied research. New material developments (recycled materials, with recyclate
content, recyclable mono-materials, coated paper packaging, ...) further increase the challenge of
managing these issues in companies. This project aims at a targeted knowledge development and
transfer regarding leak detection and seal integrity in packaging to companies in order to facilitate
the implementation of appropriate detection technology(ies) according to company requirements.
The ultimate goal is to minimize losses within business operations at material, process, product,
societal and environmental levels.
