Title

The Door - we never enter. An artistic research into the relations between the unconscious, architecture and (the) dissent. (Research)

Abstract

Within the realm of architecture lies a nuanced landscape where societal norms and values are both reflected and contested. In my doctoral research, I explore the complex terrain of dissidence, the unconscious mind, and class structures within architectural practices. Drawing upon theoretical frameworks from sociology of space, psychoanalysis, and poststructuralist theories, I employ artistic research methodologies to investigate this nuanced relationship. Utilizing sculptural and cinematographic practices, I focus on the "dissident gesture" and "deep listening" intertwined with a case study of Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897-2000). Her innovative architectural contributions as well as her politically active life serve as a catalyst for broader discussions on architecture's transformative potential as a social and political force. My perspective diverges from traditional approaches by prioritizing embodied experiences and acknowledging the influence of the unconscious and dissidence in shaping our interaction with the built environment. By challenging established narratives and power structures, my research aims to unearth marginalized voices and perspectives, highlighting both architecture's complicity in perpetuating social norms and inequalities and its dissident potential.
