Title

UrbEd - Building a European Urban Education Framework (Research)

Abstract

Increasing urbanization poses complex challenges to European city regions, including increased social and spatial segregation, resulting in growing social inequality and eroding social cohesion. Education is put forward as a means to address these challenges as it has the potential to provide inclusive experiences for youth and learn them to actively participate in society. However, education in metropolitan areas experiences also influences of urbanization, though remain underexplored in European educational research, hindering adequate action in educational practice. Therefore, this project aims to develop a framework for European urban education, comprising a theoretical model and a method to grasp urban influences on schools. A phased research approach will be followed: first, a systematic review study will summarize influencing factors and outcomes of urban education, reported on in European schools, yielding a preliminary model and key concepts. The second phase includes case studies in Paris and Brussels to depict urban influences experienced by two schools, serving as a test of the method and an illustration of European urban education. Finally, a Delphi study with international experts will be conducted to refine the model and translate it into the 'school in the city scan' method.
