Abstract
The CRYOSTAT project focuses on improving the recycling process for lithium-ion batteries in Flanders to enhance the recovery of critical raw materials and reduce environmental impact. With the growing use of batteries in electric vehicles and energy storage, recycling has become crucial for a sustainable future. The project aims to develop safe, innovative methods to discharge and shred end-of-life batteries using cryogenic (freezing) technology to prevent safety risks like fires. It also explores recycling techniques for materials including cathodes and anodes to maximize their reuse in new batteries. By improving recycling efficiency, the project will help reduce Europe's reliance on imported raw materials, create local jobs, and support a circular economy for batteries. The results will provide Flanders with a competitive edge in battery recycling, fostering safer, greener, and more cost-effective processes for the future.
