Title

EMJM SAFE: Safe Systems Approach for Road Safety (Education)

Abstract

The Erasmus Mundus Design Measure (EMDM) aims to establish the innovative Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) "SAFE," focusing on road safety through the Safe System Approach (SSA). This aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the needs of the EU transportation sector, and the EU's Vision Zero strategy for sustainable and smart mobility. The consortium comprises of four leading EU universities: Hasselt University (UHasselt, BE, coordinator), University of Zagreb (UNIZG-FTTS, HR), National Technical University of Athens (NTUA, EL), and Université de Technologie Belfort-Montbéliard (UTBM, FR). It is further strengthened by academic partners from third countries and industry and government stakeholders. Capacity building among road safety professionals is needed in many countries, as lack of road safety has far-reaching implications; road crashes remain a major public health problem, causing millions of deaths and injuries worldwide each year. By considering the guiding principles of the SSA, we aim to provide students with the unique knowledge and skills to identify and analyse road safety problems and to design sustainable and effective solutions. Emerging trends such as autonomous and electric vehicles, as well as technological advancements and practices in road safety, are integrated to train students on how innovative technologies can improve road safety in a sustainable way. The curriculum is built on the principle of constructive alignment, ensuring coherence between learning outcomes, teaching activities, and assessment methods. The EMDM will deliver: • A 120 ECTS curriculum with defined learning outcomes, didactic concepts, and course content. • A legal and administrative framework for the EMJM SAFE, including accreditation via the European Approach for Quality Assurance of Joint Programmes.
