Project R-2643

Title

Layout of a plan of action for the quantitative assessment of exposure and health effects of traffic exposure in Flanders, focusing on ultrafine particles (UFP) (Research)

Abstract

It is estimated that air pollution is responsible for more than 2 million premature deaths each year worldwide. The pollutants named by the World Health Organization as most harmful to humans, are particulate matter, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. One of the main sources of air pollution worldwide is transport. Until now, exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) has not been examined in Flanders. However, this group is toxicological very interesting given the fact its deeper penetration into the lungs. It is relevant to determine the relative importance of these groups in relation to traffic, compared to other dust fractions or other traffic pollutants.
