Project R-16803

Title

TwinCity: Research Infrastructure for Realistic Urban Digital Twins and Simulation . (Research)

Abstract

TwinCity is a next-generation research infrastructure enabling realistic simulation and analysis of urban environments by integrating multimodal sensing, AI, and immersive visualisation. The platform combines data from omnidirectional cameras, LiDAR, swarming drones, and edge computing to construct high-fidelity urban models. These can be explored through AR/VR setups, motion tracking, and interactive scenario generation. TwinCity supports interdisciplinary research in mobility, road safety, urban planning, architecture, AI and ICT, and enables both fundamental and applied scientific research across academic and societal domains. Its scalable design allows integration with existing simulators and serves as a testbed for real-time AI-driven analysis. Developed by IMOB (Transportation Research Institute) and DFL (Digital Future Lab), the infrastructure bridges technological innovation with societal relevance, addressing the needs of researchers, local governments, and industry. TwinCity positions UHasselt at the forefront of human-centred, data-driven urban innovation.
