Title

Enhancing Legibility: Practical Legibility Research within the Visual Prosody Framework (Research)

Abstract

This research project focuses on how speech prosody can be visualized through typography to enhance reading comprehension and engagement, investigating how font design can convey not only linguistic but also emotional values, enriching experience with written text. Building on the foundational work of visual prosody research done by READSEARCH, this project aims to develop the existing two-dimensional visual prosody framework into a multidimensional, dynamic, and data driven model. This research utilizes research through design methodology, through design space, framework development, iterative prototyping, dynamic speech to text integration, and empirical user testing, we aim to identify emotional parameters in speech as well as how to link them to typographic variables for optimal visual representation that enhances comprehension without reducing legibility. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the research space, this project combines various fields including typography design, Human Computer Interaction, etc. With the aim to deliver a validated model and framework for emotion visualization in type design.
