Title

Corrosion Impact on Shear connections in existing steel-concrete COMposite members: a structural health monitoring perspective (Research)

Abstract

The research project CISCOM is devoted to the long-term corrosion monitoring and assessment of the shear connections in steel- concrete composite structures resorting to shear studs. It aims to characterize the interaction between cracks, corrosion and sustained load application on steel-concrete members, with a specific focus on the degradation of the connection, through small- medium- and full-scale experiments, detailed finite element (FE) modelling and empirical methods. A particular key objective is to evaluate the applicability of acoustic emission (AE) sensors for long-term corrosion monitoring of such steel-concrete interfaces, developing a comprehensive database on corrosion initiation, propagation, and distribution under sustained loading. Additionally, the project will investigate the impact of corrosion on the fatigue life of composite members. A simplified 2D FE modelling strategy associated to a new crack-based coupled corrosion-mechanical modelling framework will be developed for industrial application. Design guidelines and appropriate safety factors will be recommended for long-term corrosion effects, contributing to the implementation of the future generation of Eurocodes. Finally, the project will propose effective long-term corrosion monitoring protocols for industrial applications to enhance steel-concrete composite structures' safety and durability.
