Title
Promoting Waste-to-Resources in Dar es Salaam: Empowering Communities for Sustainable Development (Education)
Abstract
This Short Initiative tackles key challenges in Dar es Salaam, one of Tanzania's fast-growing cities, by transforming waste management into a sustainable and community-driven practice. Building on the resource recovery facility in Kimbiji— established through the IUC project —this initiative raises awareness of waste-to-resource solutions. By fostering social and economic empowerment, the project creates a resilient recycling ecosystem that benefits both people and the environment. The project will engage local communities and households in mapping the waste value chain (WP1) to create a waste management protocol that serves their needs, commits to creating awareness and engagement for long-term change (WP2) by co-creative gamification of the waste-to-resources aspect within primary schools, and constructs a Waste-to-Resources Economic Model (WP3). Through an interdisciplinary partnership between ARU and UHasselt, the approach ensures scalability, impact, and long-term sustainability.
