Title

DSI workshop on co-developing sustainable global research & alumni networks. (Education)

Abstract

The Data Science Institute (DSI) at the University of Hasselt has cultivated a robust, long-standing research and alumni network across the Global South through its VLIRUOS funded Master of Statistics ICP program. However, as the VLIRUOS landscape evolves to place a greater emphasis on sustainable alumni engagement and self-sufficiency in its next phase, the long-term viability of our extensive partnerships is at a critical juncture. In March 2026, DSI will organize an international workshop week bringing together academic partners from the Global South. The workshop week aims to create space for dialogue, exchange, and joint reflection on the future of international collaboration, alumni engagement, and sustainable academic networks. Through a combination of workshops, presentations, and networking moments, participants will share experiences and perspectives, with a strong emphasis on reciprocity, long-term engagement, and shared responsibility with the ultimate aim of moving beyond project-specific funding dependency and achieving institutionalization of our international partnerships. The event will be strategically linked to existing initiatives such as the VLIRUOS ICP North Workshop and an alumni event for second-year master's students. This creates opportunities for interaction between international partners, alumni, students, and researchers, highlighting the added value of international collaboration across different communities within Hasselt University. With this workshop week, DSI reaffirms its commitment to sustainable international cooperation, knowledge exchange, and global connectedness, in line with the broader internationalization strategy of Hasselt University.
