ReCon - Structural reuse of concrete: Development of an integrated framework for assessing the reusability of concrete structural elements (Research)
Abstract
The European Green Deal and the Flemish Vision 2050 call for an accelerated transition towards a low-carbon and circular construction sector. Reusing structural concrete elements represents a significant opportunity, as many components retain substantial load-bearing capacity after demolition. However, large-scale implementation is hindered by a lack of knowledge, standardised procedures, and reliable methods for assessing the technical performance and remaining service life of reclaimed elements. This project aims to stimulate the reuse of horizontal structural concrete elements, such as beams, girders, and hollow-core slabs, by developing a practical guideline for the Flemish construction sector. The guideline will provide a step-by-step framework covering inventory, dismantling, technical assessment, remanufacturing, and redeployment of reclaimed elements. Furthermore, calculation methods for evaluating residual capacity and reusability will be developed, supported by inspection frameworks and practical reuse protocols. The project combines the expertise of Buildwise and UHasselt in reuse strategies, structural assessment, and destructive and non-destructive testing with economic analyses. The resulting methodology will be validated through practical case studies. The project will deliver directly applicable knowledge and validated tools that reduce technical and economic uncertainties associated with concrete reuse, support the development of circular business models, and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions in the construction sector.
