FLEXLAS: Efficient Transition towards Flexible, Dynamic and Hybrid Welding Production through Automation, New Technologies and Modular Welding Fixture Systems. (Research)

Abstract

FLEXLAS supports manufacturing companies in the transition towards flexible welding automation, with particular attention to production environments involving small to medium-sized series. The project develops a practical framework to support informed decision-making regarding welding automation. A decision matrix is developed to enable companies to evaluate different automation solutions based on financial, operational, and technical aspects. The project also develops design guidelines for efficient workpiece preparation and for the design and use of flexible and modular welding fixture systems. The applicability and scalability of modular welding fixtures are investigated and demonstrated, with attention to rapid and flexible setup and the reuse of components. The resulting knowledge is made accessible through an interactive web-based decision guide. The project also investigates how welding fixture components and configurations can be digitally captured so that they can later be retrieved, reused, and analysed. Visual guidance technologies, such as laser projection and augmented reality, are investigated and demonstrated to support operators in correctly and reproducibly setting up and reconfiguring welding fixtures. In this way, FLEXLAS aims to support companies in the practical application of flexible welding automation and in making technically, operationally, and economically informed decisions.
