Title
Development and evaluation of an evidence- and location-based experiential learning platform by means of naturalistic research to improve traffic safety among (non-)motorized two-wheelers in
Vietnam (Research)
Abstract
In the Southeast Asian region, the road environment is complex, characterized by motorcycles. Hence, 46%
of the accidents involve motorcycles. In Vietnam, the percentage is as high as 61%. Among these accidents,
youngsters are the most vulnerable group. This highlights the importance of effective traffic safety education.
Presently, traffic safety education is focused on providing theoretical knowledge and simulating the
awareness of hazards. This is not effective in providing students with the knowledge they should have about
the complex mixed traffic environment. In the development of learning competencies, experiential learning
plays a significant role through direct engagement with the real-world environment. However, experiential
learning has not yet been operationalized and validated in the context of traffic safety education in the
developing nations.
The aim of this study is to bridge this knowledge gap by designing and evaluating a location-based
experiential learning platform (LELP) that can be used in the context of traffic safety education for young
people using (non-)motorized two-wheelers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. To achieve this, a four-phase
mixed-method study design will be used. In the first phase, baseline behavioral studies will be conducted to
compare theoretical safety knowledge and actual hazard perception using survey, hazard perception tests,
and interview methods. The dataset will be built by identifying risk traffic behaviors using computer vision
technology. In the second phase, an experiential learning platform will be developed. In the third phase, the
effectiveness of the platform will be investigated. In the fourth phase, the usability and acceptance of the
platform will be analyzed.
