Title

Functional Intensive Training to improve Mobility and Self-Care in Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy: An ICF-Based Mixed-Methods approach in the Nepalese context (Research)

Abstract

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the leading cause of childhood physical disability in Nepal, where geographical and financial barriers often limit access to specialized care. This project evaluates the effectiveness of a contextually adapted rehabilitation model known as Functional Intensive Therapy (FITCare). Moving beyond traditional approaches, FITCare emphasizes intensive, short-term functional goal training with high levels of caregiver involvement. The research is structured around three main pillars: (1) the cultural adaptation and validation of international assessment tools for the Nepalese context, (2) evaluating the clinical impact of intensive therapy camps in urban hospital settings, and (3) investigating the feasibility of community-based rehabilitation in remote rural areas. By analyzing both the functional outcomes of the children and the qualitative perspectives of parents and therapists, this project aims to develop sustainable, culturally appropriate rehabilitation strategies. Ultimately, this research seeks to enhance independence and quality of life for children with CP across Nepal, ensuring care reaches those in even the most underserv ed regions.
