Integrating human factors into planning models for enhanced order picker well-being. (Research)

Order pickers play an essential role in warehouse operations, where a large part of the work relies on human labour. The wellbeing of these workers is therefore crucial for efficient warehouse operations. However, existing planning models primarily focus on operational objectives, such as productivity and efficiency, while human factors and order picker well-being are often given limited consideration. This research aims to integrate human factors into planning models to enhance the well-being of order pickers without losing sight of operational performance. Qualitative and quantitative research methods are used to identify which human factors are relevant to planning and how they can be incorporated into planning decisions. Experimental research is then conducted to evaluate the effects of human-centred planning models on both order picker well-being and operational performance. In doing so, this research aims to contribute to more human-centred and sustainable warehouse planning.
