Project R-17000

Title

Situationally aware 3D reconstruction of large and challenging environments (Research)

Abstract

Creating realistic 3D twins of large real-world environments like historic city centers, construction sites, or disaster zones is increasingly explored for applications in planning, robotics and crisis control. In practice, mapping these spaces can be slow, blind, and fragile. This PhD project proposes to investigate methods for situation-aware 3D scanning. The research will explore smart algorithms aimed at guiding operators along efficient capture routes, generating early on-site previews to help identify missed spots, incrementally updating maps as environments change, and reducing sensitivity to unpredictable weather or lighting conditions.
