Title

Air pollution caused by fine particles and markers of inflammation and hemostasis in elderly people with diabetes. (Research)

Abstract

Objectives: 1. Studying the short-term effects of fine dust on pulmonary and cardiovascular parameters (endothelial and platelet function) in individuals with diabetes and elderly in which parameters are measured by the same person during different seasons and during periods of relatively high and low concentrations of fine dust in the air. 2. Determine whether people with diabetes that take medication with an anti-inflammatory action(including stanines)are less sensitive to the effects of air pollution (if the power is large enough). Our target group includes relatively healthy people with diabetes who regularly come to the diabetes consultation at Gasthuisberg. Exclusion-criteria include active smoking, serious cardiovascular complications and asthma. Older people are recruited through service flats where a field laboratory will be established.
