Title

Formation and charge transfer mechanism in semiconducting polymer / CVD diamond heterostructures - POLYDIAM (Research)

Abstract

The aim of the POLYDIAM project is the formation of heterostructures based on thin CVD diamond films in combination with electro-active small organic molecules, and semiconducting oligomers and polymers. In a broader framework, the project is related to the fundamental study of solar energy conversion using novel self-assembled monolayers of organic molecules and their interfaces to inorganic surfaces. Through the formation of novel organic/inorganic systems the fundamental study of charge transfer mechanisms between these materials is envisaged, generating knowledge that is indispensable for future novel photovoltaic solar cells, molecular switches and other electro-active optical components. Summarised, the three major parts will be carried out are 1) chemical synthesis; 2) CVD of diamond + growth mechanisms of molecules on the surface; 3) chemical bonding methods + charge transfer mechanisms. POLYDIAM will combine and broaden the available expertise present within the four participating groups of the Institute of Materials Research, further positioning them in the highly competitive international research field of carbon-based materials. This will lead to new research questions and funding channels.
