Project R-3395

Title

PHL-doctoral of Remco Roes with titel : ' The scenography of sublime spaces ' (Research)

Abstract

The main focus of this 'research by design' is the translation of the philosophical concept of 'the sublime' into a spatial form. The spatial challenge is approached from two opposite sides. The first entails a philosophical and historical reading of the sublime. The other approach consists of the creation of spatial works within the context of an artistic practise with an emphasis on scenography. The hybrid nature of the research is supported by a dynamic method that respects the nature of the different disciplines and at the same time encourages interaction between them. The separate components and individual disciplines within the PhD are united in one conceptual structure, an imaginary interior. The research process consists of a dérive within this enclosed space whereby a simultaneous exploration of both the theoretical framework and the possibilities for artistic intervention can take place. The final product will be a constellation consisting of visual, spatial and textual components. This collection of coherent fragments will ultimately be distilled into a series of practical design tools that can be appropriated by practitioners of interior design. The emphasis in the development of these tools is on their usability within re-use assignments.
